You are. All SIX of you who are still checking my blog! Mom, both my sisters-in-law, my boyfriend… ;)
It’s time to put a new spin on the blog. It’s tough to cook all the time and still work 50 hour work weeks, and fulfill your New Year’s Resolution to get fit, AND have a social life, all while keeping up with the blog and not going broke from overpriced ingredients & gadgets. So I’ve been thinking, “what can I do to make this less of an obligation and more of a document of my daily life?”. Cooking, after all, is a part of my life, but not always “daily”. Sometimes you throw things together because it’s 8 pm and you’re tired and need to go to bed in an hour but you have to feed yourself, you know? And you guys don’t want to read about that! My boring salads, or a can of black beans over rice. I mean really…
So from now on, here’s my plan:
1. I’m making it a goal to provide 4 recipes a month – a cocktail, a breakfast or dessert, an entree, and a snack or side. This way I can knock it out in a weekend (when it’s light outside to take pictures!) and I won’t be overloaded or overwhelmed with food I can’t (or don’t need to) eat.
2. In between recipes, I’d like to do some posts about local foodie “goings on”. This may be restaurant reviews, stores you need to check out or local events. I find my twitter account has been a good source of local foodie news and Greenville is absolutely an incredible place to eat. We have so much going on and my boyfriend and I are always checking out new places or returning to old favorites, so why not highlight some of these awesome spots?! And who knows, maybe I’ll see an increase in my local readers :)
3. In addition to a focus on “local gastronomy” and Fresh Milk recipes, I want to do some quick posts on my favorite grocery store finds, new products I’ve tried, my go-to kitchen gadgets, etc. For the time being, I’m also going to include some “healthy living tips” as a way to hold myself accountable to my New Year’s resolution and also share the love with you guys! Because trust me, if I can do it, you can do it. No really! Nothing’s worse than a fitness tip from a triathlete-marathon-running-yogaphile who’s giving you advice while sipping on beet juice in lieu of lunch. I’m just a regular girl, trying to get my butt in gear. :)
So on that note… Let’s begin with a cocktail, shall we? We’ve made it through Monday, but we’re not quite to Hump Day yet. I think a cocktail is necessary!
THE BEE’S KNEES
Juice from 1/2 a lemon (about 1 oz)
1.5 oz Honey Simple Syrup (see recipe below)
3 oz. good quality Gin – Hendrick’s is my favorite, trust me, you can taste the difference. But I had Tangueray on hand for this post and was still delicious!
Garnish: Rosemary stem, basil or mint leaf
1. Make your Honey Simple Syrup: Combine equal parts honey and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then stir until honey has completely dissolved. Pour into a container with a lid, and keep refrigerated for up to two weeks. NOTE: Use the highest quality honey you can find (and look for local honey!) Orange Blossom or Raspberry honey work well as they have a sweeter flavor, but mix it up and try different varieties.
2. Put Honey Syrup, Gin and fresh lemon juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously (ideally you want tiny bits of the ice to flake off into the mixture), pour into a martini glass. Garnish with your herb.
This cocktail has a neat history, which adds to its charm and simplicity. The Bee’s Knees starting popping up in Speakeasies and living rooms around the US during Prohibition. It is said that the honey masked the smell of the alcohol in the cocktail, and the lemon juice cut the bite. There’s no need to hide it now, but it still makes one delicious cocktail that will turn even the most loyal of vodka drinkers over to gin. I’ve been dying to mix it up and try some infused gins with this. I think a lavender-infused gin would be amazing with the honey and lemon!
